in Traditional Village Contexts MAY 2–13, 2006 with Anna Ilieva and Anna Shtarbanova
The Institute of Archaeomythology is honored to offer this special tour focusing on the traditional ritual dance of Bulgaria led by the most respected researchers of Bulgarian traditional dance— Anna Ilieva and Anna Shtarbanova. This is a rare chance to study with these legendary dance historians in actual village contexts, and it is the first time they have consented to lead a dance tour in their home country of Bulgaria.
This unique tour includes daily folkloric sessions with Anna Ilieva and Anna Shtarbanova, participation in the “St. George’s Day” ritual in the village of Varvara, presentations by the “Bistritsa Grannies” folklore ensemble and other village groups, visits to regional museums and archaeological sites guided by internationally recognized scholars, opportunities to dance with village dancers and musicians from Bistritsa to the Black Sea. The tour price covers all listed offerings as well as transfer from and to the airport, comfortable lodging, most meals, group travel on a modern air conditioned bus, and live dance music throughout the tour by Karen Guggenheim on gaida, and Jana Niernberger Muhar, tapan. presenters Dr. Anna Ilieva is Director of the Folk Music and Dance Department, Member of the Academic Council, and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Folklore, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. Her daughter, Dr. Anna Shtarbanova, is a First Degree Associate Researcher at the Folk Music and Dance Department of the Institute of Folklore, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Drs. Ilieva and Shtarbanova, affectionately called “the Annas,” are considered the foremost experts on the traditional dance of Bulgaria as a result of nearly 50 years of original research in the field. Since Anna Ilieva began her investigations half a century ago, most of the authentic village festivals have disappeared. Their combined work serves as a priceless chronicle of the rich but vanishing fabric of traditional village ritual dance. Prof. Ivan Marazov, internationally known Thracian specialist, and Chair of the Department of History, New Bulgarian University, Sofia, will be our guide to the elaborate mythology and ritual traditions of the Thracians of ancient Bulgaria.
tour leaders Joan Marler worked closely with archaeologist Marija Gimbutas as editor of the Civilization of the Goddess (1991) and lectures internationally on Dr. Gimbutas’ life and work.
